Canada Set to Become the First in the G7 to Home an SMR

Canada is intensifying efforts to expand its nuclear sector as governments, industry leaders and research organizations position nuclear energy as a key component of the country’s clean energy and economic strategy.

Growing electricity demand, decarbonization targets and energy security concerns are driving renewed interest in nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors (SMRs), reactor refurbishment projects and advanced research initiatives. Industry groups say the sector is entering a new phase of growth, supported by investments in innovation, workforce development and domestic supply chains.

The federal government recently announced plans to develop a national Nuclear Energy Strategy aimed at accelerating new nuclear projects, expanding uranium production and strengthening Canada’s role as a global supplier of nuclear technology and expertise. Officials have described the sector as an economic opportunity capable of generating jobs, attracting investment and supporting Canada’s transition to low-carbon energy.

Organizations such as the Nuclear Innovation Institute are helping drive research, skills development and collaboration between industry, governments and academic institutions. Recent initiatives have focused on workforce training, community engagement and advancing practical clean-energy solutions that can be scaled across the country.

The sector’s expansion is also creating demand for skilled workers in engineering, construction, operations and advanced manufacturing. Industry leaders warn that attracting and training the next generation of nuclear professionals will be critical to meeting future growth targets.

Supporters argue that Canada’s long-standing expertise in reactor technology, uranium production and nuclear research provides a strong foundation for future growth. With several provinces exploring new nuclear projects and the federal government signalling stronger support for the industry, stakeholders believe Canada is well positioned to play a larger role in the global clean-energy transition.
